Grounds are all-white - but Sussex fixture lists are not

Sussex sport is suffering an all-too-familiar blank weekend as clubs call off football matches and other fixtures because of snow.

It’s the fifth weekend in the past seven that the county’s sporting schedule has been badly hit by the weather.

With lots of snow on the ground and more expected, many clubs acted early to call off games - including the Rocks, whose Ryman premier division tussle with Canvey Island at Nyewood Lane was called off on Friday afternoon.

Rocks secretary Simon Cook said: “In view of the deep snow we are experiencing and the forecast of more to come, tomorrow’s match at Nyewood Lane against Canvey Island has been postponed. A new date for the fixture will be announced shortly.”

The scene at Nyewood Lane was captured by club programme editor Rob Garforth.

Quite a number of Sussex League and West Sussex League football matches are already off - with few if any expected to survive.

Games off include: Rocks v Canvey Island, Hastings v Carshalton, Lewes v Margate, Whitehawk v Hampton & Richmond, Arundel v Selsey, Crowborough v Sidley, East Preston v Pagham, Hassocks v Dorking, Lingfield v St Francis, Ringmer v AFC Uckfield, Horsham YMCA v Lancing, Littlehampton v Little Common, Mile Oak v Storrington, Rustington v Broadbridge Heath, Saltdean v Wick, Saltdean v Eastbourne Utd, Loxwood v Southwick, Westfield v Seaford, Sidlesham v Roffey, Billingshurst v Ifield, Midhurst Res v Loxwood Res, Bosham v West Chiltington, Lavant v Upper Beeding, Newtown Villa v Peacehaven Res

Rugby and hockey is also hit. Chichester have called off all their club’s hockey games.

Chichester and Bognor Rugby Clubs were both due to stage home games on Saturday.

The blanket postponements give clubs and leagues an even worse fixture headache than they had a week ago. Many teams are already facing a number of midweek fixtures between now and the end of the season.
