City celebrate a goal at Shanklin

With Shanklin in the bottom two, Chichester were favourites but knew that the islanders would put up a battle. Parkes and Elizabeth Ogden – the latter back after a long-term injury – were both facing their former side.

A swirling wind made things difficult but Chichester created the better of the first-half chances with efforts from Jenna Fowlie and Lucie Challen being blocked.

Dowdell fired a shot at the keeper, then failed to bury a chance when unmarked at the back post.

Shanklin thought they had taken the lead when a wind-assisted corner caused a scramble in the goalmouth but the officials said the ball hadn’t crossed the line.

With the wind behind them in second half, Chichester piled on the pressure and restricted Shanklin to long-ball counter-attacks.

The scoring was opened when Amy Found took a quick free-kick to play the ball into Albuery who coolly finished.

Chichester’s second came when Dowdell found herself in space 25 yards out and unleashed a powerful drive into the top corner.

Despite the Chichester backline misjudging the wind a couple of times, they were in complete control.

The final goal came when sub Jodie Pallant’s pressure caused a misplaced pass that fell to the feet of Parkes whose first-time shot flew in.

It took Chichester top and they now have three home games left. The first is this Sunday against Cheltenham (2pm).
