Knight calls for siege mentality

Alan Knight believes a siege mentality could benefit Pompey after a day of intense speculation on the future of boss Andy Awford.

Discussions were held yesterday between board members over the manager’s position after the recent run of poor form.

But with many predicting those talks would result in the end of Awford’s reign, the decision was apparently made to give him more time.

Knight said: ‘As far as we know, nothing has changed so it seems like it’s a case of business as usual.

‘I think everyone was wondering what would happen because there were a lot of rumours flying around.

‘I haven’t had a chance to talk to Andy about it.

‘But I know he will be focused on trying to win the next game as he always is.

‘He is a mate of mine but I know that nobody will work harder to put things right.

‘Now it could be a case of a bit of a siege mentality developing and that can help.

‘Everyone will know that they have got to go out and start doing the business.

‘Even without the speculation, they should be doing that.

‘But sometimes that siege mentality is what’s needed.

‘The crowd can have a big impact on that as well.

‘With their backing for Andy and the team, it can make a huge difference, rather than when people are divided.’

Knight also believes the players must ignore the scrutiny on the manager’s position and concentrate on doing their own jobs.

He added ‘The speculation will have got through to the players and will leave one or two wondering.

‘But as a player, you’ve got to be professional and carry on.’
