Late drama sees Fernhurst grab Midhurst Invitation Cup

Fernhurst clinched victory in the Midhurst Invitation Cup final against a resilient Hindhead side, winning 3-2 thanks to an extra-time penalty.

The deadlock was broken midway through the first half as Fernhurst whipped a low ball into the area and winger Ashley Peck took one touch to control it and a second to hammer it in off the post.

Hindhead looked more determined after the break and slotted in an equaliser.

Heads dropped in the Fernhurst camp and Hindhead’s right-back heaved a hopeful punt into the area, only to see it bounce and fly into the top corner.

But clever wing play by Fernhurst led to Tim Jarmand equalising to force extra-time.

A collision between Peck and the Hindhead defence earned a slightly-dubious penalty. Dave Williams stepped up, his leg cut and bloodied from a goalmouth scramble, and sidefooted home the spot kick.

That proved the winner and clinched the silverware for a side who had lost the final a year earlier.
