Martin's men on the march in Sussex League

Selsey 2 Hailsham 0

Selsey continued their fine form with a 2-0 win against Hailsham Town to break into the top half of the table.

Ed Bowers got Ian Martin’s side of to a flyer after just eight minutes, with Dan Hegarty adding the decisive second four minutes into the second half.

Selsey are starting to find their clinical edge that so often left boss Martin wondering how his side failed to kill off games.

The win was Selsey’s ninth of the season and means they are only three points off seventh position, a feat that seemed unlikely before Christmas.

The home side started with confidence and Bowers put them ahead when Graham Bush put him in behind the defence and he coolly rounded the keeper and slotted home.

Selsey seemed to lose confidence and Hailsham took the game to them. Many chances went begging for the visitors and they could feel unfortunate not to have been in front at half-time. A mixture of poor finishing and good goalkeeping by Sam Joyce kept the home side in front.

The second half was better for the home side and debutant Hegarty scored with a well-placed header from James Parsons’ cross in the 49th minute.

Better defending by the home side kept French in check for the visitors and they looked less dangerous in the second half. One effort smashed against Joyce’s post and was cleared.

Selsey made the most of their good fortune and held their lead.

This Saturday they head to Glover Lane to play 13th-placed Sidley United. Then they have a break of a fortnight before the visit of Hassocks.

Martin will be pleased with his side’s resurgence in 2011, with two clean sheets in their last four games and six goals scored in that time.

And with 15 games left to go in the season Selsey appear to be on the road to a comfortable mid-table finish.

SELSEY: Joyce, Fallick (Sheppard), Haggar, M Hinshelwood, Morey, Hegarty (Dobbs), Britton, Morey, Bush, Bowers (Lafferty), Parsons.

Selsey reserves entertain Hailsham on Saturday (Jan 22, 3pm).
