Meet football's new Invincibles

Six Villages' seven-a-side football team have notched up a whole year unbeaten.

The offshoot of the West Sussex Sunday League side won 9-1 on the anniversary of the start of their unbeaten run in the Premiership at Pitch Invasion’s Thursday Night League in Chichester.

And now they have capped a memorable year by clinching the title.

Their winning run of 16 games has seen them score 80 goals and let in just seven.

Gary Jefkins, event co-ordinator for Pitch Invasion, told them: “It is a fantastic effort over the past year.

“As a team you fully deserve everything you have achieved and won. You turn up week in week out and always give 100 per cent in every game you play.”

Andy Janman started the team a few years ago and has had numerous players over the years but since May 2010 they have had the same group of lads.

Janman said: “It has been a hard slog which started as a couple of games unbeaten, then we aimed for the season, and just kept setting the bar higher with little targets to beat.

“Before we knew it, we were three months then six months unbeaten and then we set our marker for the year, which although we all wanted we never thought we would reach.

“When we came to the crucial game everyone was slighty nervous we may slip up at the last hurdle, but the lads all stepped it up gear to demolish the opposition – and the following week beat the opposition 8-0.

“Our next step is the two-year mark ... we can all dream but it’s highly unlikely.”

The heroic players are Steve Piggott, Andy Janman, Jamie Holden, Brad Maciver, Rob Linkhorn, Joe Newton and Ian Longhurst.

The Six Villages Sunday team are looking for a new sponsor to supply a kit for the coming season. And any players interested in joining in training are being sought.
