Southern Combination division one

A Jamie Crone double and one from Lewis Hole gave Common a 3-1 win at home to Midhurst – leaving John Suter’s side to finish the season third-from-bottom.

A forgettable first half had a real end of season feel to it. Midhurst had the best chance when Luke Sheldrick’s header was hooked away from near the goal-line by Russell Eldridge.

Common grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck with two goals in the opening ten minutes of the second period. Hole opened the scoring in the 50th minute with a side-foot volley from well-delivered free kick - his 27th goal of the campaign.

One became two five minutes later. The ball looped up after a save by Aaron Jeal and the goalkeeper got his fist to it, but could only punch as far as Crone, who drilled a low shot in off the post.

Midhurst got one back in the 62nd minute. The Stags got in down the right and the ball was squared for Sheldrick to score with an emphatic first-time finish.

Home goalkeeper Joe Rogers made an important save from Sean Dummer as the Midhurst susbstitute tried to round him.

Common made the match safe in the second minute of added time. Crone outpaced the last defender and slotted past Jeal for this 34th goal of the season in 36 appearances.

* Selsey finished 13th after a final-day 1-1 draw at home to Southwick. Ben Mepham scored the Blues’ goal just after the half-hour but Southwick levelled four minutes later.

Sidlesham finished two places higher, a creditable 11th, but were denied any last-day action when visitors Saltdean failed to raise a team.

Bosham 7 Ferring 0

Southern Combination division two

Bosham ended their home campaign in fine style with a rout of luckless Ferring at Walton Lane.

Following a heavy loss to Cowfold last Thursday and a comfortable win at AFC Roffey Club on Saturday, the Robins returned to the Lane to give their expectant supporters a tret on Monday.

Ryan Hillier once more lead the line and the gulf in class showed from the off as Bosham controlled possession and pressed the Whites defence – but it took some time for the hosts to get their noses in front.

Twenty minutes in, Hiller did the trick, firing past keeper James Wills following excellent build-up play from Nick Edgington.

Chris Neale went close for Ferring with a drive from long distance that almost shaved the post.

Close to the interval Bosham scored three in four minutes with Graeme Dowden, Pat Bulbeck and Jake Lafferty all on target.

Dowden benefitted from a calamitous mistake from Wills to tap into an empty net. Bulbeck slammed home from a goalmouth scramble with Ferring baying for an offside flag, and Lafferty made his mark, stretching out a leg to divert a header from Edgington into the net.

In the second half, after a frustrating period, substitute Dave Storey was upended in the box and Dowden confidently tucked away the resulting spot-kick.

A few minutes later Lafferty grabbed his second, ending a mazy run with a quality finish and celebrating in style.

Storey rounded off the scoring by grabbing the seventh poking in through a crowd in the box to round off animpressive performance and bring the curtain down on the home season.

An away trip to Ifield and the Division 2 Cup final against AFC Varndeanians at Storrington next Tuesday remain for the Reds.
