Mullins takes wage cut to secure exit

Hayden Mullins has taken a significant pay cut in a bid to help Pompey survive.

The Blues midfielder sealed his free transfer exit to Birmingham yesterday – agreeing a two-year deal with the St Andrew’s outfit after passing a medical.

And he is set to be followed out of Fratton Park by Aaron Mokoena, who has reached an agreement to terminate the final year of his contract.

Mokoena is expected to return to South Africa to sign for Bidvest Wits.

Mullins’ exit means Pompey will remove one of the biggest earners from their wage bill.

The 33-year-old is thought to have commanded in the region of £20,000-a-week, with two years still on his agreement.

Mullins is understood to have taken a reduction on his earnings to push the move through and help Pompey to survive.

The player will get a portion of what he is owed for the remainder of his Pompey contract.

But that will be staggered over an extended period, with Birmingham forking out the rest of the money Mullins will receive.

The switch brings his three-year Fratton stint to a close after he joined from West Ham in 2009.

After being signed by Tony Adams, Mullins made 129 appearances and scored three goals for the club.

Mokoena notched up 89 appearances at Pompey, scoring three goals, after he joined from Blackburn in 2009.

Both David Norris and Luke Varney are also expected to be on their way from the club by the end of this week.

Leeds are keen on both players, with Sheffield Wednesday also trailing Norris.
