Pagham can’t turn dominance into victory

With Julian Boniface skippering the side and marshalling the defence with authority, the Oak hardly had a shot to test Lions keeper Chris Clark

The opening goal came just after the quarter-hour as Dan Martin’s long-range strike whistled into the Oak net to give Pagham a deserved lead. With Joe Gromett looking lively up front, there was a positive look to the home side. Alex Kew was desparately unluck on 26 minutes as a shot pinged back off the post.

Ryan Cox marked his return to Lions’ colours with some fine crossing, giving Dan Simmonds the chances to stretch the lead.

Eight minutes after the restart, Pagham thought they had their second, but the referee saw an infringement. This seemed to galvanise the visitors, who equalised on the hour. A penalty gave Clark no chance, but Pagham didn’t seem disheartened.

Dan Kempson broke up play, while Terrell Lewis added another attacking dimension.

A speculative shot from Simmonds might have restored the Pagham while Gromett went through for a shot which ended with him injuring himself, thankfully not seriously.

Pagham drew 1-1 with Fareham Town three days later.
