The 24-year-old got 84 minutes under his belt at the Ricoh Arena after arriving from Accrington Stanley last week.

Buxton explained the injury was a setback as he looks for momentum and aims to make a mark at his new club.

Paul Cook has intimated the versatile talent needs to work on his fitness.

Buxton promised he’s focused on doing all he can to deliver on that front.

He said: ‘It’s a thigh strain which was a bit of a nightmare.

‘I did it in pre-season when I was away in Portugal with Accrington. It was literally the last session.

‘These things happen, though, and I’m over it and raring to go.

‘I’m doing everything I can to get up to speed as fast as I can.

‘I’m going to do everything I can in training to feel fully 100-per-cent fit.’

Buxton is sparring with Drew Talbot for the starting spot at right-back.

The former Wigan trainee feels having that competition will push him along.

He said: ‘Hopefully, once I can get in the team I can stay there. I feel like when I go in, I’m going to be going into a winning team.

‘So when I get the chance I’m really going to need to take it with both hands.

‘It’s nice to have that competition – it can only spur you on.

‘If you’re in the team you are looking over your shoulder knowing someone wants your place.

‘That can only help you.’
