Pompey fans urged to pen new songs

Fans are to be given the opportunity to create new songs for the Fratton faithful.

Pompey will next week host a special social evening designed for budding wordsmiths to conjure up tune alternatives.

The event, which could become a monthly get together, will take place on Thursday, January 24, in the Victory Bar at 8pm.

John Westwood and his band have also agreed to be present in an attempt to coordinate any new songs which emerge. And to oil the creative cogs, there will also be an offer on drinks, with Carlsberg, Strongbow, Greene King IPA or a glass of house wine for £2.80 and tea, coffee and soft drinks for £1.

In addition, a comedian is hoped to be on hand to warm up the evening.

And organisers are urging as many fans as possible to turn up to contribute to the sing song.

A Pompey spokesman said: ‘The idea has come from the fans, who have suggested an evening like this several times.

‘People are teeming with new song ideas and it’s just a question of enabling them to learn the words and for the drummer to know what they are and drum along to them.

‘We can’t sit back and say “what a great atmosphere”, you have to work on it these days.

‘It’s not the same as the past when people would start songs in the pub and bring them to the ground, that does not happen so much any more. You have to work harder at it.

‘We’re looking for fans to come along, help come up with some really good song ideas and be part of the great Fratton atmosphere.

‘In addition, every penny people spend on the night goes towards helping the club keep going, so we’re urging supporters to come out in their numbers.’

Doors for the January 24 event will open at 7pm, although it will start at 8pm, with all fans welcome.

Alternately, you can e-mail your new song ideas to neil.allen@thenews.co.uk or via Twitter by contacting pn_neil_allen

These will then subsequently be passed on to the club and discussed during the evening’s events.
