Pompey are to follow the Michael Drennan approach to rebuilding Miles Storey’s shattered confidence.

The 20-year-old has been left out of the Blues’ last three squads, raising questions from the Fratton faithful.

It is an absence explained by Andy Awford as being prompted through Storey’s current lack of confidence.

At present the Pompey boss does not feel the Swindon loanee is in the right place to be considered for first-team duty.

For Awford it represents a similar situation he found Drennan in when he took over as caretaker boss last season.

And he is striving to repeat the solution by boosting Storey on the training ground.

He said: ‘What you have to do is work with them on the training ground until they are confident.

‘We had it with Michael Drennan last season.

‘Obviously Drenno is a different person but when I first took over his confidence was low and wasn’t in the right place mentally.

‘If they are not in the right place mentally then they cannot go out there.

‘Miles is the same at the minute – and he won’t mind me saying that – but he has a massive part to play.

‘He is young, 20 years old, he is going to have his ups and downs.

‘He came in on a rollercoaster ride if you like and was really going well but things haven’t gone his way of late, in training and in matches.

‘So he just needs picking back up and we will do that and put him back together and he will play his part.

‘He has got to work hard and be prepared to do it and then when he is ready we will put him back out there and hopefully see a very good player in Miles Storey.’

Storey has made 12 appearances for the Blues so far, scoring once.
