Andy Barcham’s Pompey availability is still uncertain as he continues to wait for the birth of his first child.

The winger wasn’t considered for the Tuesday night fixture with Accrington Stanley after it was believed his wife was going into labour.

That wasn’t quite the case and Barcham returned to the club yesterday morning for a gym session.

The Blues’ next match is at Chesterfield on Monday night, yet Barcham continues to remain a doubt.

And Barker will once again have to leave it late to see whether the 27-year-old can be considered for his match-day squad.

He said: ‘Andy wasn’t going to play against Accrington but was going to be involved.

‘We thought his wife was in labour on the Tuesday so mentally his mind was never going to be here and understandably so, with the birth of his first little one.

‘He then contacted me on Tuesday night asking what the plans were for training the following day – then rang me yesterday morning and said “I’ll see you in training”.

‘He came in, did some gym work and said it was driving him nuts.

‘I suppose there was no point him sitting there looking at her!

‘So I’ve told him to keep in touch over the next 48 hours and do whatever it is you need to do.

‘I would have to say if he is not available and she hasn’t had it by Monday she has had a rough time!’

Barcham had started the previous match at Scunthorpe yet was one of five players who had already lost their places from that 5-1 defeat.

In his absence there were recalls for Ricky Holmes and Romain Padovani in midfield areas, while Barker reverted to a 4-4-2.

With an eye on Chesterfield, Pompey are also in talks with the Republic of Ireland over Michael Drennan’s availability.

The striker has been called up for their under-21 match against Montenegro on Wednesday.

Although Barker is hoping Simon Ferry, Joe Devera and Ryan Taylor can be considered following injury.

The trio all missed out on the Accrington victory.
