Rance at the double as Pagham brush Horsham YMCA aside

Pagham simply brushed aside their opponents from Horsham and with a bit more luck could have doubled or even tripled their score.

The Lions looked comfortably the better side right from the start and both Jamie Carroll and Joe Clarke could have opened the scoring inside the first six minutes, but both had stinging shots saved by YM keeper Jeal. The pressure remained on the away side as Carroll had a header saved and Jared Rance hit a reasonable chance wide.

When Ash Hawkes had a 20 yarder kicked clear by Jeal it looked as though Pagham just wouldn’t ever score, but Rance was on hand on 40 minutes to squeeze a shot between the outstretched fingers of Jeal and the post for 1-0.

Nothing much changed in the second half but YM did manage a few efforts and Conor Kelly had to be on his mark a couple of times with smart saves. Carroll blasted a 30 yard free-kick straight at the keeper before Rance put his side 2-0 up on 70 minutes with a scorcher! Picking the ball up in the Horsham half, he ran at the retreating defenders, twisted inside and smashed a 25 yarder over the keeper and into the roof of the net.

There were three more incidents of note before the final whistle, first Tom Atkinson had a long-shot well saved before Kelly was forced into an excellent one-on-one save in the dying minutes. To round the game off, Rance beat the defence again, but with the goal gaping he hit his hat-trick chance high wide and not so handsome. Shame!
