Rangers have gone for a Burton as Pirates win derby

Max Burton scored his second of the season as the Nyetimber Pirates came out 2-1 winners in this exciting derby.

Pirates gave a debut to Ross Ludlow, who was impressive throughout.

It was always going to be fiery after the last meeting between the two clubs.

Rangers started the brightest but against the run of play, Ryan Vevers recaptured some of his early-season scoring form after latching on to a long goal kick and volleying from the edge of the area, leaving the keeper helpless.

Pirates struck again soon after and Burton was involved in the start and finish of the move.

He brought the ball down on his chest on the halfway line and hit a spinning volley into the path of Sean Williamson, who hit a superb cross into the box which was met by a diving Burton, who celebrated his second of the season with the human bagpipes.

Pirates should have gone with a bigger lead at half-time after dominating the rest of the first half but just couldn’t capitalise on their chances.

Rangers went at the Pirates in the second half. The Pirates conceded a penalty when Michael Palmer handled in the box, but Jamie Walter saved Nathan Stock’s spot-kick superbly.

Nyetimber were reduced to ten men with 25 minutes to go when Tom Williamson saw red for a second yellow. Rangers kept pressing and hit the post as they looked to pull one back. The persistence paid off when Matt Robb scored, leaving Nyetimber’s lead on a knife-edge.

Pirates were reduced to nine men when captain Griffin was shown a straight red by referee Bob Minty. Rangers threw everything at the game but they couldn’t seem to overpower Nyetimber’s defence, who held out superbly.

Pagham were reduced to ten in the dying moments when scorer Robb was dismissed for a foul on man-of-the-match Sean Williamson.

The Pirates showed superb character keeping their 16-match winning run going.
