CHICHESTER CITY continued to haul themselves out of relegation trouble on Tuesday night with a 1-0 success at bottom side Worthing United in division one of the Sussex League.

There wasn’t much in it during the opening half-hour, although United created a couple of solid opportunities.

Aaron Farrier hit a shot wide by a couple of inches and then an Adam Wilde effort came off the post.

City worked their way into contention during the closing stages of the first-half and then never really looked back when taking the lead 12 minutes after the interval.

The Worthing defenders failed to deal with a throw-in and Tom Smith slipped through to score.

The visitors then had three further clear-cut chances to secure a second goal that would have made the result safe, but failed to find the net.

The only real United danger came from the occasional breakaway, and ultimately Chichester cruised home to a comfortable third consecutive triumph.

It lifts them out of the bottom three for the first time in months and puts them in among a larger group of teams all closely bunched in terms of points.

City are at home to Crowborough on Saturday and then face a tough task on Tuesday when they entertain new league leaders Redhill.

CITY: Roberts, Heath, Boniface, Hagan, Hibbert, Tribe, Blatchford, Cassasa, T Smith, Watts, Groom. Subs: Northeast, F Smith, Goodge.
