But what do you know about the loanee, who arrives until the end of the campaign? Here’s the lowdown on Paul Cook’s new striker.

Although born in Croydon, Wilkinson has been capped for Republic of Ireland at under-17, under-19 and under-21 level.

The 21-year-old came through the ranks at Millwall, but never made a senior appearance before signing a three-year deal with Bolton in 2013. He’s since extended that contract until 2018.

The striker has made four Championship appearances with Bolton, two appearances in the Capital One Cup - and appeared in a 0-0 FA Cup draw at Liverpool last year.

It’s been a much-travelled loan existence for the 6ft 3in hitman in his time with the Trotters, with temporary stints at Chester, Torquay, Oldham, Barnsley and Newport County.

The striker has played his football for Barnsley and Newport County this season - with two goals arriving in 24 appearances.

Pompey fans were given a glimpse of Wilkinson earlier this month when he made a 30-minute appearance off the bench in the Exiles’ 3-0 win at Fratton Park.

Wilkinson is available for any play-off fixtures, if necessary. Michael Smith’s 93-day loan ends before the final-day clash with Northampton.

The striker made his league debut against Paul Cook’s Chesterfield in 2014 - while playing for Torquay. Cook’s side ran out 4-1 winners.

Wilkinson replaced a former Pompey loanee when he made his league bow - coming on for Jayden Stockley with 15 minutes left.
