Towers quick to get stuck into Selsey task

New Selsey FC boss Richard Towers has started reviewing whether he needs to boost the squad to spark a new era of success at the High Street Ground.

The ex-Arundel manager took his first training session on Tuesday night and has set about running the rule over every player at his disposal before deciding if he need to add to the ranks.

Towers was offered the position on Saturday by chairman David Lee and agreed to take the job.

Towers takes over from Adam Hinshelwood, who stood down at the end of the season to move to an assistant’s role at Ryman League side Burgess Hill after a year in charge.

Lee said: “The club are delighted Richard has agreed to take on the position as club manager as he has a wealth of experience within the county scene.

“He has proved successful at his previous clubs and his best-placed finish was when Arundel were runners-up in division one.

“He is held in high regard by many in the area and I’ve no doubt he will help to take the club forward.”

Towers acquainted himself with the players at his first training session on Tuesday.

He said his first priority was to look at the players at the club and see if he needed to improve the squad.

He said: “I welcome any existing and new players to the club for training and hope I can build on what’s already been achieved at Selsey.

“I’d be very interested in renewing some contacts with players I’ve worked with in the past.

“The first team ended last year in mid-table (in county division one) and were losing finalists in the RUR Cup. The reserves also made a cup final and the third team gained promotion to division one of the West Sussex League, so it seems the club are in a healthy position. I want to improve on this and help bring success to Selsey FC.”

Steve Bailey has become reserve-team manager. He has been in charge at Hunston FC and has had a very successful time with them, taking them to the premier division of the West Sussex League.

Bailey said: “I’m looking forward to running the reserves. It’s my intention to get the team playing good football and help develop them into better players.”
