About a year ago Jack Heaselden, a Sussex-based FA skills coach, ran weekly sessions at Inspire Leisure Centre in Felpham. The FA are promoting girls football and Heaselden had enough girls interested to put together a small team.

He contacted local clubs to see if they would be prepared to create a girls’ team. Barnham Trojans were the only ones to take up the baton. After several meetings with their chairman a team kit and equipment were provided.

Girls started training on Saturdays and have spent the past year with coaches from Brighton & Hove Albion’s youth development unit.

The upshot is Barnham Trojans now have a new team for girls in Year 6 and 7. Matches are played on Sundays at Olivers Meadow,Westergate, and they train on Saturdays at 10am. They are called Barnham Trojans Pumas under-12 and play in the Arun and Chichester Youth League.

They have played a couple of games this season but have struggled with numbers. There were nine registered players but one dropped out.

Matches run for 30 minutes each way and are nine-a-side so the Pumas need more players.

With seven being the minimum to prevent forfeiting a game the team are desperate to find girls willing to play in the team on Sundays. The eight girls come from Bognor, Felpham and Barnham and are all friendly.

They are learning lots and seem undeterred by losing their first couple of matches as they realise they are a new team.

Coaches are proud of their commitment and team spirit and would love to increase numbers to compete against teams with 14-15 players.

If you are interested or know of any girls who love playing football and would like to join or go to training, contact Alan Smallman on 07740 466070 or Steve West on 07960 495252 or at [email protected]
