West Sussex League: Stedham rescue point against Rudgwick

In a weekend which saw many games fall foul of the weather, Stedham was one of the few places local football could be watched.

The fixture was due to be at Rudgwick but their pitch was unplayable so it was switched to Stedham.

The first half was very even Marcus Williams saw an effort fly over from close range.

Williams had to then be withdrawn with a knee injury, replaced by Craig Turner.

Stedham went ahead 10 minutes into the second half from a corner, the ball falling to Turner, whose shot drifted in.

Rudgwick struck back immediately as poor defending led to a shot being lashed past Harry Lambert.

Ten minutes after the equaliser the visitors took the lead. A weak clearance fell to a Rudgwick player 20 yards out and his shot took a deflection, lifting it over Lambert in Stedham goal.

Luke Sheldrick, Sean Dummer and Loui Bicknell came on for Stedham and Sheldrick went close, while the home side had an equaliser controversially ruled out for offside.

Rudgwick were penalised for a foul on the edge of their box and when the ball was clipped across the box, Jamie O’Leary headed it back across goal for Liam Dreckman to slot home, making the final score 2-2.

MoM was Keith Martin.

Stedham boss Tom Chaplin said: “I was disappoint to concede the goals in the manner we did, but credit to the lads – they probed right until the final whistle and got a well deserved equaliser.

Stedham hope the league resumes on January 9.
