Whittingham: Early decision was right call

Guy Whittingham was thankful common sense prevailed over the Scunthorpe postponement.

The Pompey caretaker boss believes it was sensible to see the decision made early yesterday to call off the scheduled clash at Glanford Park.

The Blues were gearing up for what would have been a nightmare journey north for today’s scheduled League One meeting.

Snow and plummeting temperatures are making for hazardous driving conditions across the country.

Pompey were due to set off for the game yesterday morning from their Eastleigh base.

But that never happened after a 9.30am inspection ruled that Scunthorpe’s pitch was frozen and would have been unplayable today.

Whittingham was pleased neither Pompey’s players nor their fans were made to make a wasted long trip to Lincolnshire.

He said: ‘It was appreciated the way it was handled.

‘With the way things were going down here we could have struggled to get up there.

‘That’s the common sense of making an early decision.

‘It’s good for the fans to know in good time, too. It was the right thing to do.’

With the adverse weather leaving Pompey unable to train at their Eastleigh base, the current squad were sent home yesterday.

They were given their own training schedule for this weekend, before returning to work on Monday to gear up for next Saturday’s meeting with Hartlepool.

Whittingham said: ‘The players will get on with their own programme over the weekend and then we will go again on Monday morning.’

Pompey’s postponed clash with Notts County at Fratton Park has been rescheduled and will now be played on Tuesday, January 29 (7.45pm).
