Freya flies flag for Chichester in Sussex girls' cricket squad

CHICHESTER'S Freya Davies is among nine junior players who have been selected for the Sussex Women's Cricket's junior super fours winter training programme.

She will join Georgia Adams, Sofie Cawley, Melissa Ferguson, Chiara Green, Izi Noakes, Sophie Parnell, Hannah Phelps and Carla Rudd on the scheme.

During the summer eight of them played in the junior fours competition, where the best 48 girls in the country competed in four teams.

They played in matches against one another over a week and were monitored by the England selectors.

All nine players will attend two training sessions, one in November and one in February.

Sussex coach Charlotte Burton was delighted so many girls had made the grade.

She said: “It is fantastic we have nine players in the junior super fours winter training squad.

“We have never had this many in this squad at one time.

“It is a great achievement by all the players selected.

“Individually they have put in some brilliant performances throughout the season for Sussex and all deserve their place in the winter set-up.

“Sussex have a good set up with girls’ cricket and it shows with a quarter of the junior super fours squad being from Sussex.”

It means the future of Sussex women’s cricket continues to look good with these players selected.

Hopefully many can follow fellow Sussex players Holly Colvin from Middleton, Sarah Taylor, Laura Marsh and Caroline Atkins and go on and represent England.

Freya has had considerable success at Chichester Priory Park.
