Glorious Goodwood: The lowdown on day four

The pair are 7/1 joint favourites for the heritage handicap with race sponsor Betfred.

Four-year-old filly Stirring Ballad, who finished down the field when badly hampered in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot, is set to bid for a second victory at Glorious Goodwood having readily won the seven-furlong Tatler Handicap at the meeting 12 months ago.

Britannia Handicap fourth Wentworth heads to Goodwood on the back of a close third behind Prince Of Johanne and Es Que Love (20/1 & 9st 5lb) in a Sandown Park handicap on July 6.

Dance And Dance (12/1 & 8st 12lb) was fifth when carrying top-weight in the 2011 renewal of the Betfred Mile and the son of Royal Applause is set to line-up again following a fast-finishing fourth in the Bunbury Cup over seven furlongs at Newmarket’s July meeting on July 13.

The seven-year-old has posted some excellent races in Pattern company, filling the runner-up spot in Group Three races at Salisbury and Epsom Downs as well as coming home fifth in the Grade One Woodbine Mile in Canada last year.

His trainer Ed Vaughan reported: “Dance And Dance is all set for the Betfred Mile. I have been praying for a chance of luck with him, but the gods have not been kind to me.

“He was hampered in the Bunbury Cup and was the best finisher on his side. He would have nearly got up with another 50 or 100 yards, so the return to a mile at Goodwood should suit him.

“He ran well off 108 in the Betfred Mile two years ago, when he was probably unlucky not to win, and he’s running of 94 this time. He’s a horse who lets you know when he is feeling well and is certainly giving me all of the right vibes.

“We put blinkers on him at Newmarket and he will definitely be wearing headgear again at Goodwood. I wouldn’t risk not putting them on after he ran so well - he wasn’t too keen in them and we wanted to try and doing different things with him at his age.

“He seems to be OK on most going. Originally, he was a horse that seemed to need soft ground but his best recent form seems to be on a faster surface. They do such a good job at Goodwood and I am sure that the ground will be top notch.

“It’s a very valuable race and I am keen to have a very good crack at it.”

Friday’s card also features the £100,000 Group Two Betfred King George Stakes (3.40pm). The 21 entries for the five-furlong sprint include former winners Kingsgate Native (2009), Borderlescott (2010) and Masamah (2011), King’s Stand Stakes third Pearl Secret and dual Group Three scorer Tickled Pink.

Masterstroke could make his first appearance since finishing third in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in the opening £60,000 Group Three Coutts Glorious Stakes (1.55pm), with Group Two victor Aiken and John Smith’s Cup second Stencive also among 17 entries for the mile and a half contest.

Recent Listed winners Montiridge, Professor and Baltic Knight feature in 13 contenders for the mile £60,000 Group Three Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes (2.30pm), while QIPCO 1000 Guineas fourth Winning Express is one of 21 fillies and mares engaged in the seven-furlong £60,000 Group Three Oak Tree Stakes (4.50pm).
