Toronado (Richard Hannon jnr) landed the QIPCO Sussex Stakes in 2013 and returned to action in superb style when landing the Group One Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot in his 2014 seasonal debut on June 17. The young pretender to Toronado’s crown is Kingman (John Gosden).

Beaten by Night Of Thunder (Richard Hannon jnr) in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, the son of Invincible Spirit has subsequently looked imperious in winning the Group One Irish 2,000 Guineas and in the Group One St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he gained revenge on Night Of Thunder.

Hannon’s strong hand in the mile QIPCO Sussex Stakes – the Glorious Goodwood feature on Wednesday, July 30 – also includes triple Group One winner Olympic Glory, successful in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury in May, and the quadruple Group One-winning filly Sky Lantern, who finished an encouraging fifth on her seasonal return in the Group Two Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot behind Integral (Sir Michael Stoute).

Aidan O’Brien has six contenders going forward, including Queen Anne Stakes runner-up Verrazano.

Further overseas interest is provided by German challenger Chopin (Andreas Wohler) and the South African-trained Soft Falling Rain (Mike de Kock).

Horses can be added to the QIPCO Sussex Stakes at a cost of £19,500 at the supplementary entry on July 24.
