The winner of the Arthur Powis Cup, an 18-hole strokeplay competition, was John Williamson with a nett score of 65. Second was Paul Boughton with 68 and third was Denny Terry with 70.

Arthur Powis was a founder member of the veterans’ section and the cup was presented by Arthur’s daughter Eddie Williamson - who is also John’s wife and a past ladies’ captain.

When Eddie and John originally presented the cup to the club in memory of her father, John promised that when he was a veteran he would win it for her - and this year he did just that.

The second presentation was to the winner of the Eddie Maghie Trophy, a nine-hole Stableford for the over-75 super vets. Ted Growns won with 17 points on countback from Doug Tupper. Third was Peter Brooks with 16 points. The presentation was made by Sylvia, Eddie’s widow.

The Chichester Veterans’ Summer Trophy competition was played in pleasant weather with a keen wind and it proved exciting. The competition is sponsored by the Royal Garden Hotel, whose owner Colin Lindsell provided the prizes.

The early leader was Bill Penn with 39 points but he was surpassed by Don Fowler and then Ken Hart, who equalled his score but with better back nines. The fast-improving Mike Skinner came in with 40 points and looked the likely winner - but in the last group, Nick Hobbs equalled his score and, with 22 points on the back nine, he took the trophy.

Result: Trophy winner - Nick Hobbs 40pts, 2 Mike Skinner 40, 3 Ken Hart 39, 4 Don Fowler 39; Nearest the pins - 4th hole, Richard Holden, 6th Rob Baldwin, 13th Terry Greene, 15th Peter Green.

The veterans ended June and started July in fine fashion with three victories over very good opponents. The first of these matches against Lindfield was revenge for an away defeat in March and with two matches halved and three others going to the 18th green, it was very close. Chichester ended up 5-3 victors.

With two players of such quality it was obviously going to be close and so it proved, with neither player establishing a significant advantage.
