Rowlands Castle ladies visited Selsey. The match was a draw on a day which was fine but windy, which made play difficult.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Cup, a Stableford competition, was won by Barbara Winter with 34 points and Meg Mearns with 33.

BOGNOR

Captain’s Day was an exceptional success with 156 players taking part and the scoring helped by light refreshment on the seventh tee.

The course was tip-top thanks to the hard work of the team and the rain held off. Entry fees raised just under £800 for charity.

The men’s Rubens Medal attracted 62 players, a super number considering it was played the day after the Captain’s Day.

More than 80 players took part in Bognor’s seniors’ invitation, fast becoming a not-to-be-missed event. Bill Chick and Ron Allcott have run this competition for many years.

The weather was superb, as was the course and dinner. The Allcott & Chick Trophy was won by Peter Lott and his colleague Colin Petch with 46 points, closely followed by Ivon Towse and Pat Turner on 45.

Third on countback was JJ Stephenson and Bruce Maskell. There was an abundance of prizes presented by club captain Chris Hickling.

Bognor Seniors took part in the Jack Lemmer Trophy, which also doubles up as the Fletcher Round 3. Bryan Madgwick not only did the double but clearly enjoys this competition as he also won it in 2015. It was an incredible feat as he only returned from his 2 week holiday at Gatwick airport at 6 am on the morning of the competition, and had to dash to Bognor for his 9am tee time.

Results: 1 Bryan Madgwick 39pts, 2 Brian Wolstencroft 37; 3 John Chapman 37. Div 3 winner: Mike Matthews 34.

Bognor seniors played away at Rowlands, where they lost 5-3. In the second, at home to Chichester, the match was evenly tied until the last pairs, which Chichester won to clinch a 4½-3½ win. The return match is at the beginning of August.

COWDRAY PARK

On a fine day, Cowdray seniors took advantage of the benign conditions for their monthly Stableford to clock up some very good scores, although only four players out of 71 recorded a two.

Early starters Peter Laws and Mel Milburn seemed to inspire each other to new heights and, for a long time, the big-hitting Peter Laws headed division one with 41 points.

He was finally displaced at the head of the leaderboard by a re-vitalised Steve ‘The Shank’ Tkaczynski, who recorded his best score for some time, 42 points, and claimed his place in the end-of-season seniors’ championship.

His playing partners, Peter Hardcastle and Harvey Terry, seemed to feed off him and recorded good scores of 37 and 39 respectively.

In division two, Mel Milburn, who had matched Peter Laws shot for shot, claimed his second win of the season, with 40 points and also put himself at the head of the Carter Trophy standings, based on Stableford finishing positions.

His position was threatened late in the day by Bernie May and the ever-consistent Paul Chater, who both returned with 39.

Members were pleased to welcome captain Derek Smith back to the clubhouse to oversee the raffle, following his serious spinal operation some weeks ago, though his return to golf is some time away yet.

A generous contribution from George Crouch and raffle proceeds benefitted Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice by £196.

Results: Div 1: 42 Steve Tkaczynski; 41 Peter Laws; 40 Gordon Kendall; 39 Chris Hutchings, Harvey Terry; 38 Dave Lucking, Pat Harrison. Div 2: 40 Mel Milburn; 39 Bernie May, Paul Chater; 38 Bruce Spooner; 37 Rodney Fisher, Alan Richardson, John Durrell. Twos: Harvey Terry (3rd); Peter Burton (17th), David Tulip (17th) and Bernie May (11th).

Cowdray seniors entertained Blackmoor, who fought back from 2-0 down to win 4½-3½ with a victory in the final match. The home pair of John Doran and Wally Mitchell got things moving with a 3&1 win with Wally Mitchell taking full advantage of the shots received.

There was a close tussle between the lowest-handicapped players on each side, which went the way of Paul Owen, partnering Mike Cardiff to a 2&1 win. Owen recorded a score of four over gross after 17 holes, with two birdies.

Having established a 2-0 lead, Cowdray failed to build on it and allowed the visitors to dominate the rest of the day.

The match between Nick Austin and Gary Strowbridge and Blackmoor’s Roy Boxall and David Worrall was rated by the players as the most exciting match they had played in, as each side were two up at one stage but were pegged back only to finish up all square at the end.

Allen Sibley and Ken Marjoram earned a hard-fought half, despite conceding a nett 15 shots to their opponents. In the final and deciding match, Chris Hutchings hurt his back early on and was unable to lend full support to partner Brian Carpenter, allowing the visitors to win and close the match out.

Results: (Cowdray names first): John Doran & Wally Mitchell beat Norman Foster & Ross Sellers 3&1; Paul Owen & Mike Cardiff beat Nigel Everett & Len Hannington 2&1; John Newman & Barry Overington halved with Brian Matthews & Gordon McKay; Dave Coombes & Roger Poat lost to David Elcome & Chris Ingram 2 down; Allen Sibley & Ken Marjoram halved with Ed Jenner & Alan Pickett; Nick Austin & Gary Strowbridge halved with Roy Boxall & David Worrall; Clive Brine & Roy Penrose lost to Colin Green & David Lewendon 5&3; Chris Hutchings & Brian Carpenter lost to Kevin Connolly & Lloyd Jones 3&2.

Frank Cheevers won his second-round match 2&1 against past captain Sam Howes, his highlight a 30ft putt from off the green for a birdie two. Ironically Howes had already holed in one – his first ever ace.

Cowdray Ladies played in an EGU four-ball better-ball competition. They performed well on a rainy day.
