Golf: Selsey’s silver shared around

The winner of the bowl was Barbara Winter and the runner-up was Eddie Williamson.

An irons-only competition was won by Sue Bligh; runner-up Rita Green, while a Texas scramble was won by Annette Terry, Barbara Winter and Judy Sharpe.

A team of Selsey ladies played Littlehampton on one of the warmest days of the year. It was closely contested with two matches being decided on the last hole and the match finished 2-½ to Littlehampton.

Two mixed matches were played - the first was the Marlene Briance Salver, played against the veterans over 18 holes. The weather was warm and sunny and the winners were Doreen Scragg and Brian Chamberlain.

The Tom Keep Trophy saw the ladies welcome the club’s men. Winners were Sue Bligh and men’s section captain Craig Newman.

BOGNOR

The four-team challenge at Bognor Golf Club, when 12 members of the ladies, juniors, seniors and men’s sections go head-to-head for the bragging rights, was played last weekend. The men’s tactic this year was to wear bright colours to dazzle the opposition and once the juniors had stopped laughing, battle commenced.

Men’s captain Simon Watts just edged the opening skirmish from junior captain James Woosley, and with club treasurer Martin Seagrove and Peter Stoneham also picking up maximum points, the men’s team were off and running.

Defending champions, the seniors, finally got into their stride as Mike Oates grabbed a maximum, but the juniors were steadily accumulating points with three second places in the first four groups. Lin Harbutt posted four points for the ladies and by halfway, there was only two points between any of the teams.

Superb efforts by Katie Field, Megan Tinson and Harry Malin saw the juniors edge ahead but then the men’s tail wagged and despite Frank Hodder’s big four points for the seniors, Sara Stoneham’s maximum for the ladies and a gallant finish by Thomas Hendrick for the juniors, Andy Fields ‘four-pointer’, disloyal lady captain’s husband Mark Watson and Derek Dady achieved top billing for the men’s team. Watts was delighted to receive the trophy from Allan Delves following many years in the seniors’ possession.

Bognor seniors had one win and one draw in their latest games.

At home to Ifield, Bognor won 4½-3½ with Mike Oates and Jim Catt winning the last pairs game to sway the match in Bognor’s way after the game had swung end to end. There was also an excellent 5&4 win for Bognor’s main pair of Kaemena and Collins.

At Waterlooville, in a very exciting match in cold and damp conditions, Waterlooville just managed to win the last two pairs to halve the match 4-4.

The mixed seniors played their last game of the season with a good 5-2 win over Worthing GC. Captain Jim Morris kindly thanked all players who have played this season.

The ladies of Bognor played a four-ball better-ball captain-versus-secretary team event, with a good turnout of 40. While the matches were very competitive, they were played in good spirit.

The final result was a honourable half in ladies’ captain Lyne Watson’s final event of her year.

On an autumnal morning, 48 ladies played their medal final. The winner was Sue Sidebotham with a nett 70.

Other scores: Silver Div - Sue Crossen 71, Wendy Johnson 73, Lynn Miller 75. Bronze A - Sue Sidebotham 70, Margaret Martin 72, Denise Duquemin 73. Bronze B Jane Finch 71, Sara Stoneham 75, Kim Mercer 81.

COWDRAY PARK

Cowdray Park seniors travelled to Ham Manor having beaten them at Cowdray. Ham Manor fielded a strong team and made home advantage count by winning 5-1.

Match manager Terry Adsett and Nick Austin were beaten but the 4&3 scoreline did not reflect the closeness of the match as many Cowdray putts lipped out.

Not for the first time this season, the man who helped prevent a whitewash was the indomitable George Crouch, who partnered Peter Hallt to a 2&1 win This has been a remarkable year for Crouch on the course, culminating in a last hole defeat in the semi-final of the seniors’ singles knockout.

Over the two matches Bill Hummerston and his two partners faced the top Ham Manor pairing of Steve Mountain and Brian Trigg, halving at home and losing away.

Cowdray Park seniors travelled to Corhampton, where perfect conditions greeted the players on a lovely but challenging Hampshire course on the South Downs high above Bishop’s Waltham.

Match manager Wally Mitchell, partnered by reliable John Doran, who had won the club monthly medal earlier in the week, found themselves under the cosh when Corhampton’s Keith Waldron birdied the first hole. But the visitors held their nerve and ran out winners by 4&3.

Cowdray took a 2-0 when David Heard and Brian Carpenter won by one up.

The closeness of this fixture was clearly illustrated by five of the remaining six matches all going to the 18th hole before being decided.

In the end, honours were even and the match finished 4-4, a commendable result for the visitors in this popular fixture.

This match brought a satisfactory conclusion to Wally Mitchell’s 14 years tenure as match manager of this fixture and he was warmly thanked by Corhampton’s captain George Angas for his efforts over the years, and he received a standing ovation for his hard work.

Cowdray seniors held their monthly Stableford under clear blue skies. Heavy overnight dew took a long time to clear, which may go some way to explaining the low scoring, although many players are still struggling to get to grips with the greens following their recent thorough maintenance.

Only three players (Allan Sibley, Cliff Davis and Bernie May) equalled par, with no-one exceeding it, which nobody could remember happening before. Division-one winner, on countback, was Sibley from Davis with three players tying for third place on 35 points: Paul Owen, Peter Hallt and Gordon Kendall, followed by Peter Laws on 33.

Division two was won by May, his first victory since joining the seniors, ahead Clive Brine on 35 points. Both players have earned a late call up to the seniors’ Champions’ Trophy.

Arthur Mayson continued his fine form this year, tying for third place with Dereck Cooper and Phill Morris on 34. Five players finished on 33 - John Renwick, Rodney Fisher, Ian Ward, Ralph Fanshawe and Mike Holden.

Twos were recorded in division one by Sam Howes, Frank Cheevers, Mark Kelly and Paul Owen, and in division two by Bernie May and David Christie.

The raffle raised £154 for Dreams Come True.

Cowdray Park club captain Harvey Terry organised a captain’s awayday at Alresford Golf Club for more than 20 members from all sections of the club.

The overall winner of the day’s competition was senior John Newman, who recorded 32 points, while in second place was Dave Hirons with 32 and he also won two further prizes during the day.

The course, although not the longest, proved a real test for the players, as evidenced by the scores.
