Ladies' pro-am still going strong at Cowdray

Thanks were given to the new sponsors JRB Golf, who kindly donated the prizes and also gave each competitor a winter visor. As always the day’s proceedings were officiated by the SPGU.

The format was 2 best scores to count on every hole towards the overall team score.

The best pro score was from Cowdray’s Tim Allen with an amazing 67. He also led the winning team with a score of 17 under par. Dave Dorans from Slinfold came in second with an individual score of 69 and a team score of 15 under par.

Results: Best 1 – 9 holes score - Alresford Ladies; Best 10-18 holes score - Horam Park Ladies; Nearest the pins, 3rd hole - Nicky Dugard from Worthing; 9th hole - Deirdre Wickens from Littlehampton; 11th hole - Sian Roberts from Cams Hall; 17th hole - Claire Gould from Alresford; 12th hole (nearest the pin in two) - Charlotte Topping from Mannings Heath; Best Team Name - Jolley Hopefuls.

The golf was followed by a meal and prizegiving and the raffle raised £320 for the Lady Captain’s charity, Alzheimers.

A September Stableford was also held by Cowdray ladies.

Cowdray Park seniors entertained Farnham, having drawn 4-4 at the Sands course earlier in the season. This time the hosts pressed home their home advantage by winning 6½-1 ½, with no Cowdray pair losing and Farnham’s points coming from three halved matches.

David Wickham bade farewell after seven years as match manager of this fixture to take over the Hindhead fixture. He teamed up with his successor Mark Kelly for a decisive 6&5 win. Kelly holed some long putts early on to give the home side the lead, which the visitors were never able to claw back.

There followed a series of dramatically-close matches which could have gone either way, but fell the way of Cowdray by the narrowest of margins.

Seniors’ captain Derek Smith and John Newman halved the 18th to clinch a win by one up. Ian Heustice and Sam Howes fought back from three down to force a half by winning the 18th.

Nick Austin and Chris Hutchings battled hard for their win by one up before Brian Carpenter and Mike Cardiff completed a 2&1 win.

Two halves followed from George Crouch and Mike King and Mike Holden and Mike Hughes, who registered nine pars in his round. Victory was completed by Chris Hoare, who played four under his handicap, and Trevor Edwards, who won by 5&4.

Afterwards, Wickham paid special thanks to Farnham’s match organiser Dick Turpin for his sterling work over the seven years, and expressed the wish that the strong association between the clubs would continue.

Cowdray Park seniors’ singles knock-out competition for the Lait Trophy has reached the final stages.

Semi-finalists were Phil Harrison and Gordon Kendall plus Graham Thompson and John Durrell.

Having beaten club chairman Terry Adsett in the quarter-finals, Kendall faced another strong challenge from big-hitting Harrison.

He used the shots he received to good effect to win by 2&1.

Durrell, having disposed of Ian Heustice in the quarter final, saw off the powerful challenge of Thompson to earn the right to face Kendall in the final.

SELSEY

A Texas scramble for teams of three was thoroughly enjoyed by all the ladies who played.

Winners were Sue Bywater (captain), Trudy Hynes and Rita Green. Runners-up were Hilary Kennedy-Cooke, Doreen Scragg and Judy Sharpe, beaten by one point.

The Marlene Briance Salver is a mixed pairs competition and was won by Judy Sharpe and Jerry Hollands. This was last of the mixed matches for 2016 and all have been thoroughly enjoyed.

BOGNOR

The autumn Seniors’ Supper competition attracted an excellent 72 players. It is a four-ball better-ball Stableford, with pairs being drawn after dinner on the night before the competition.

The weather on the day was excellent, as was the course, and there were many scores over 40 points, which was terrific.

To celebrate this long-run competition, started in 1990 by Ron Alcorn and Bill Chick, the club committee commissioned two wonderful new salvers for the winners, to be presented by Ron and Bill.

The autumn event will be known as the Ron Alcock Salver and the spring event the Bill Chick Salver.

Winners of this year’s Autumn Salver were Roger Selway and Alan Cranston with an exceptional 48 points. Second on countback were Andy Isitt and Chris Jenkinson; third on 46 Norman Lee and Ron Stevens.

The club captain helped Ron and Bill present the prizes which went down to sixth place to reflect the turnout, and thanked Bill and Ron, who have run the competition since its inception.

Bognor seniors travelled to Hayling Island and suffered a 6½-1½ defeat. An incident on the A27 delayed the Bognor players and practice time was lost, but in reality Hayling were too good on the day.

Bognor’s sole victory was down to Andy Isitt and Barry Forey who are both in fine form.

Results: Chris Hickling & Roger Selway lost 3&1, Barry Vanstone & David Turner lost 2&1, Andy Isitt & Barry Forey won 3&1, Steve King & Jim Stephenson lost 1 down, Tony Wells & Mike Matthew lost 1 down, Peter Lott & Clive Millett halved, Mike Oates & David Chalmers lost 3&1, Ray Leggett & Brian Wolstencroft lost 2 &1.
