Powell powers to Stableford success at Cowdray
The Cowdray Park seniors’ September Stableford was played by 101 players.
The course was in fine condition with neat fairways and receptive greens. The weather was benign, with a light breeze. Roger Powell scored an absolutely phenomenal 52 points.
Roger was playing off 19, but went round in three over par including three birdies.
The Division 1 winner was Rod Brown with 39 points, winning on count-back from Gary Traviss also with 39 points.
Division two was obviously won by Roger Powell with 52 points with Martin Gilbert second with 39 points.
The third round of the Captain’s Prize was played in overcast conditions – the air was damp but there was no rain of any significance.
The course was playing well, and the greens were receptive, true and surprisingly fast at times, however the scores recorded were more modest than of late.
Seven players scored par or better out of a field of 62; notable among those were Martin Gilbert with 39 points and Mick Folkes and Dave Hirons, both with 38 points.
These individual scores, as with everyone’s, will be carried through to the fourth and final round of the competition being held today.
The pairs competition was won today by Mick Folkes and David Heard with a combined score of 75 points.
The cumulative scores going into the final round are: Allan Gormley with 115 points, David Wickham with 107 points, followed by Eric Morrish, Rod Brown and Peter Hallt all with 105 points.
