Good start for the boy George at Goodwood - then Hannon takes over

On the night when Boy George took centre stage at Goodwood, it was another George - Baker the trainer - who enjoyed a great start to the evening's racing.

He saw his runner Iguaca, the 9/2 joint favourite, go first past the post in the first race of the night, the Goodwood Farm Shop Stakes Handicap. It was a fantastic finish with Free Tussy beaten into second place by a neck.

But if George was the name on everyone’s lips at that point, it was a Richard who was talk of the stands by the end of the six races, as Goodwood specialist Hannon notched a fine treble.

First success for him came in the British Stallion Studs Supporting British Racing EBF Maiden Stakes, in which Pat Dobbs on 11/1 shot Chandlery - half-brother of of four-time Group 1 winner Starspangledbanner - took the honours by a short head from Coupe de Ville (Richard Hughes).

Of the pair, Hannon had felt Coupe de Ville was more ready for the challenge.

In the next, the Halnaker Classified Stakes, another Hannon horse, Aldwick Bay, came in at 10/1 with Hughes on board.

And Hannon’s hat-trick - which took his number of wins at Goodwood this season to seven already - was completed in the last, as Poppy Seed, 5/2 favourite, ridden by Hughes, did the business in the British Stallion Studs Supporting British Racing EBF Fillies’ Handicap.

Hughes’ double puts him two clear at the top of the Goodwood jockeys’ table for 2011, with eight victories.

Other winners were Ted Durcan, one of a number of jockeys who’d hotfooted it to Goodwood after riding in the Oaks meeting at Epsom hours earlier, on 8/1 contender Porgy in the Racing UK Stakes and Michael Hills on 8/11 favourite Rougette in the Chichester Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.

After racing, a DJ set by Boy George saw the parade ring transformed like never before. Goodwood’s next action is next Friday (June 10) when Chris Evans takes over the DJing ... but don’t bet against Hannon stealing the headlines again.
