Herbert creates new lap record at Oulton Park

Aldingbourne driver Luke Herbert took part in rounds nine and ten of the Ma5da MX5 Cup at Oulton Park in Cheshire in his SRC Recycling-sponsored Mazda MX5 Mk3.

Qualifying took place under heavy skies and a downpour five minutes from the end meant Herbert qualified in fourth position for the first race.

With dark clouds and a drying track, tyre choice was critical. He opted for an intermediate set-up, gambling on there being rain during the race, but the rain held off and the track gave other drivers who had chosen a dry set-up the upper hand, resulting in a very close battle but eventually relegating Luke to fifth with the second-fastest lap of the race. Herbert started from ninth position for round ten and fought tooth and nail to improve on his earlier result, including an unheard-of manoeuvre at the second chicane.

Normally taken in a constant third gear, Herbert saw an advantage open up with the car in front and dropped down to second gear, giving better acceleration out of the final turn of the chicane.

He made his way up to third and with Rob Boston out in front and second-placed Adam Gore defending hard, Herbert cruised to a third-place finish gaining the fastest lap of the race and creating a new lap record for the Oulton Park circuit on the way.

Rounds 11 and 12 take place on July 2 at the Knockhill Circuit near Dunfermline.
