Heroic Harries on high with Samoan silver

CHICHESTER athletics ace Toby Harries won silver in the 200m at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa – and was within a whisker of gold.

The title was taken by 100m champion Tiotliso Leotlela, who earlier this year was fifth over 200m at the World Youth Championships where Harries, who runs for Brighton Phoenix, had been sixth and 0.06 seconds behind.

This time Harries was close enough to be given the same time – 20.56 (2.6) with the South African just ahead on the line.

Harries, now back home in Sussex, said: “England were a great team to be a part of and alongside the group of England supporters they gave me huge inspiration to perform.

“My coaches Jon and Dan had prepared me well after the world championships but it was still a huge surprise to clock a time of 20.56.

“It’s a great feeling to return as a medalist. I feel proud and honoured to represent England. I owe it all to my coach Jon Bigg and Sally Gunnell, who saw my talent and gave me the confidence to run.”
