HERO's return to Goodwood is eagerly awaited

After four successful years of the HERO summer classic reliability trial and tour, the Historic Endurance Rallying Organisation is returning to Goodwood from today until Saturday.

Open to cars made before January 1, 1984, the event attracts unique cars and crews from all over the world.

“The event keeps on attracting newcomers while retaining its core of enthusiastic supporters,” said Patrick Burke, joint managing director at HERO.

“Last year we saw the highest number of non-UK crews since the inauguration of the event, an indication that the reputation of both the trial and the Historic Endurance Rallying Organisation is spreading far afield.”

The summer trial welcomes competitive and leisure drivers as vehicles are divided in two categories: the reliability trial and the classic tour.

Vehicles in the reliability trial will be classed according to age, engine size and body type, and will take part in sections and tests with no navigational trickery or night-time driving. Navigation will be by Tulip Roadbook and no map plotting is required. The classic tour is intended for those who want a more leisurely drive while still experiencing the pleasures of classic motoring.

“We want participants to enjoy classic car driving as much as we do and to meet other enthusiasts as well. This is why the start, finish and each lunch halt will be the same for Trial and Tour so that crews on both categories stay in contact with each other”, said Tomas de Vargas Machuca, the other joint MD.

Crews will be based at the Goodwood Hotel during the three days, which will conclude on Saturday with the customary black-tie awards dinner at Goodwood House, where former British race and rally driver Jack Sears will speak and hand out the trophies.

Cars due at the event include an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce, Porsche 911 2L T SWB, a Jaguar XK150, a Triumph TR4 and a Triumph TR6.

The event is sponsored by Orianda, Classic & Sports Car and AVIS, official support vehicle partner of HERO.
