Hockey players needed by Middleton and Bognor

Middleton & Bognor Hockey Club are recruiting new members.

They have three men’s teams – with some juniors playing with the men – and a ladies’ team playing competitive hockey around Sussex every weekend.

Their aim is to have juniors to create a regular Saturday team.

There are players of varying abilities so if you or your children are interested in keeping fit by taking up a new sport or brushing up rusty hockey skills, come along to training and introduce yourselves – everybody is friendly.

To entice new members the club will charge new members no subscriptions for the rest of the season. Match fees apply, but the first two games will be free.

This cup game began with Burgess Hill dominating but they were unable to get a quick goal from their first short corner.

The impetus passed to Centurions and Mealing was unlucky not to score from a fine first stroke.

Burgess Hill returned to the attack and were soon one up.

Centurions tried to hit back and Williams forced a ball though to Thew, but Burgess Hill turned it around and after a good first save from Howard they were two up.

Solid defence from Proctor and Edge helped keep Burgess Hill at bay and a last attacking ball of the half from Pordage looked promising but at the whistle it was 2-0.

Burgess Hill’s third came quickly but Centurions got the ball through to Johnston, who had to face three defenders and was denied.

Merritt and Brown tried to create an opening but after another good save and clearance from Howard it was 4-0 to Burgess Hill.

At 6-0 down, Thew drew the keeper and rounded to score. Then Dixon tried to get the ball into the D but was thwarted.

Burgess Hill made a last push but Harris made a determined dive to divert the ball off the back-line.

Chichester Cherubs 3 Penguins 1

Sussex Development League

The Cherubs began 2012 with a sleepy 30 minutes in which the opposition scored - only to ignite in the last five minutes before the break.

In the second half the team played like they had never been on their Christmas holidays.

Short, sharp passing between Troy, Bennison and Hutchings combined with the strong running of L Gibbons, enabled Chichester to draw level.

C Gibbons and Robson went close, but it was a string of ten passes from the back that culminated in a clinical finish from Shaw and Chichester were in front.

Creswick and Palmer rarely allowed Hetherington to be troubled in goal and the win was secured by a strong strike from Stemp, deflected by Troy to add to his earlier strike.

CHERUBS: Hetherington, Palmer, Gibbons R, Stemp, Creswick, Woodruff, Troy, Hutchings, Bennison, Gibbons C, Shaw, Robson, Gibbons L.
