Horsham trio set for Hockey Masters World Cup

Suzy Clapp, Ian Brown and Sue Crake will compete against 52 others teams at the National Hockey Centre, Lyneham, Canberra.

Clapp, who will be in action for the over-40s, plays for Horsham ladies first team will be representing England Masters for the second time, having won a silver medal last year at the European event.

Horsham ladies third team player Crake, will be in action for the over-55s in her seventh year as an England Masters player.

She previously played in Australia in 2011 when England took a side over to the Gold Coast for a triangle tournament with New Zealand and won gold at last year’s European event.

Horsham second team player Brown, also in his seventh year as an England Master and fourth World Cup, will play for the over-45s.

He was placed third in 2009, won in 2011 and was runner-up in 2014.

The trio will travel Down Under next week for two days of training matches ahead of the opening ceremony on March 29.

Crake said: This is my first World Cup and for it to be in Australia where I have such great memories of playing in 2011 is extra special.

“Every year the standard of Masters hockey improves so the competition will be extremely tough, but we hope to use the momentum of winning the Europeans, in London last year, to our advantage.

“The three of us are extremely proud to be playing for our country and it’s a great advertisement for Horsham Hockey Club.”

The tournament will run until April 6 with the trio bidding for international medals.

The hockey centre playing host to the tournament is one of only three in Australia that features three international standard water-based surfaces at the one location.

The centre is able to accommodate all of the teams, coaches, staff, and supporters expected to attend the 2016 international event - which has seating for more than 1,300 spectators.
