FOLLLOWING successful courses throughout Bognor, Chichester, Littlehampton and Worthing, Sportiv8 have rolled out their new level one Affective Performance courses throughout West Sussex.

Affective Performance concentrates on helping young people aged between 16 and 18 get back on track through motivation, confidence and self-belief using a number of different techniques.

Sportiv8 courses are based around sport activity, Working with each individual to develop not only a personal fitness plan, but in addition their own personal social development plan.

Students also work towards improving their key skills, numeracy, literacy and IT helping them prepare to return to education or work.

Course co-ordinator Paul Harris said: “I have been involved in Sportiv8 in this area for the past three years and the success we have found in young people has been fantastic.

“We are above the national average for retention and attendance for these courses and that is a direct result of the support we get from Stagecoach, who offer travel to and from the courses for our students, and we know without that type of support many young people could simply not afford to attend.

“Sportiv8 is successful because we fully engage the young people into making decisions about their own futures, taking responsibility for their actions and helping them understand there is a future for them to aim for.

“At the moment we are running a very successful boxing course in Bognor in a brand new state of the art gym, voted one of the top Boxing gyms in the country.

“There are plans to start new courses in the new year in Chichester and all we require from the young people is a willingness to learn and an active interest in sport. The courses could be football or table tennis should we get enough young people on each course interested in playing a particular sport.

“The courses are run over 16 hours a week and last for 20 weeks. EMA can be claimed up to £30, but of course there is only a limited time to apply for the grant now.

“We would like the opportunity to introduce our programs into local schools for students aged 14 to 16 years old, that are finding it difficult to get motivated or engage in the education system in the hope we can help them before they become dis-engaged from education or society”
