GLORIOUS Goodwood is less than a month away – and it’s time to offer five lucky readers the chance to savour a day of it free of charge.

We have again teamed up with the racecourse to offer Richmond Enclosure passes to each day of the five-day festival of flat racing, which begins on Tuesday, July 29.

Tickets are selling fast for each of the five days as excitement mounts about the array of top-class horses and leading trainers and jockeys who will be pitting their abilities against each other on the Downs.

As is often the case, it’s the QIPCO Sussex Stakes that looks like being the most mouthwatering contest of the week with a first-ever meeting between the top three-year-old, Kingman, and the defending Sussex champion Toronado in line to take place.

Both are entered and their respective trainers John Gosden and Richard Hannon have indicated they will run, unless something untoward happens in the meantime.

But Goodwood bosses are keen to stress the festival is about so much more than that £300,000 Group 1 showpiece, which is run on Wednesday, July 30.

Day one features the Group 2 Bet365 Lennox Stakes, day thre is Ladies’ Day featuring two Group 2 races, the Artemis Goodwood Cup and the QIPCO Richmond Stakes – that on top of the Magnolia Cup celebrity ladies’ race which is set to raise £200,000 for charity.

Friday brings no fewer than four group races – the King George Stakes, Oak Tree Stakes, Glorious Stakes and Thoroughbred Stakes.

And Saturday brings the dual appeal of the Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes, the second Group 1 race of the week, and the Stewards’ Cup.

Racecourse managing director Adam Waterworth said: “There’s no doubt this year’s Glorious Goodwood looks like being a vintage one.

“We’re starting to see which top horses will be coming and the signs are encouraging that we’ll have all the big names we’d like to see.

“Ticket sales are reflecting that – they’re very encouraging. I’d expect Thursday, Friday and Saturday all to sell out before the day, and we’d expect to see the recent upward curve in popularity for Wednesday – Sussex Stakes day – to continue.”

You can book tickets online at or by calling the ticket office on 01243 755055.
