The Golf Foundation are a national organisation who aim to give all young people a positive experience through the sport.

Golf Roots was introduced to provide opportunities for young people in areas where golf had not previously been seen as an option. The project has now evolved into the largest and most successful junior golf development project in the British Isles.

Head professional Tony Westwood said the new development allowed the academy to get support from the Golf Foundation to take the game to the community by offering taster sessions to schools and youth groups.

This allows young people who might not otherwise gain access to golf the opportunity to see if they like it.

Westwood said: “Golf is a game which challenges those who play to develop essential skills for golf as well as personal skills for life. At the core of the game is honesty and respect.

“Players have to develop their ability to co-operate and self-motivate plus they enhance their ability to concentrate and to realise that success comes through perseverance.

“Golf skills are developed through structured learning and task driven challenges which encourage the student to explore and discover what is possible for them.

“Gaining this Golf Roots status allows us to gain some funding for these taster sessions so schools and youth groups get access to excellent coaching at either a low cost or in some cases no cost at all.”
