Lavant bowlers pair up for silverware bid

Lavant bowlers held a pairs competition for the Tony Conway Trophy and 12 pairs competed.

After the round-robin games the semi-finals matched Peter Lee and Denise Kirby against Ray Harding and Jim Sharrod and Viv Frost and Peter Winter against Colin Cooper and Peter Whale.

In the first semi, Harding and Sharrod pulled away to lead 8-0 but Lee and Kirby got going to pull back and win 10-9.

In the other one, Frost and Winter took an early lead but could not hold on and Cooper and Whale won 7-5.

The final saw Cooper and Whale take the lead on the first two ends but Lee and Kirby took the next two to lead 5-2.

With two ends to play the score was 6-6 but Cooper and Whale took the final two ends for a 10-6 win.

Wisborough Green 31 Lavant 30

Lavant sent a team to play a non-league friendly taster match. Games were close and Lavant won on mat one and Wisborough, who hope to join the county league next season, won on mat two.

Scores: P Winter (skip), K Fancy, M Winter, Y Squires won 19-13; T Haigh (skip), J Lee, R Peirce, A Ballantyne lost 18-11.

Lavant Blue 43 Fittleworth 35

On mat one, Lavant kept ahead all the way but five shots against them on end 20 saw them one shot down needing two shots to win – and they got three.

Then on mat two, Blue led the way and won by six shots. Lavant took the friendly mat.

A slow start on mat one put Lavant nine shots down at end ten. They improved but lost by those nine shots.

Mat two fared better and were soon well up and won by 14 shots. The friendly went to Lavant, although eight shots against on the last two ends was a shock.

ARUN

Adur 100 Arun 144

Arun took nine points out of 11 when they worked hard to get this away win.

Arun club chairman Gordon Leaman said: “I’ve been coming here for 25 years and I can’t remember a time when we won at Adur.”

This was a typical 2016 team effort by Arun with everyone playing his part.

Arun have three SCIBA league games remaining – Adur and Wealden at home, plus away to Worthing Pavilion which could be the hardest of the three.

They are games which will determine whether Arun can win the county league.

The Colin Knight Trophy will be held again at Arun on Sunday, March 20.

The all-day memorial event is dedicated to one of Arun’s most successful players. Colin enjoyed helping new bowlers, and it’s fitting that everyone has an equal chance of winning.

In their latest County League game, Arun ladies beat Adur ladies 133-66 to gain ten of the 11 points available.

DONNINGTON

Donnington played on two mats at Nyetimber and were captained by Maggie Maggs.

Scores: I Taylor, A Hawley, M Maggs, A Banham beat A Catlow, T Irons, I Hathaway, C Smith 19-13; M Corbett, C Dean, B Taylor and Terry Haigh beat A Macleod, B Rowe, V Purnell, A Watson. Donnington 19-16.

Donnington hosted Arundel. Captain for the Donnington team was Janine Bartlett and captain for Arundel team was Eddie Buckler – and Arundel won by one shot.

Donnington had a spoon drive organised by Maggie Maggs. Sixteen members took part. It was won by Adrian Hawley with 35 points. The runner up with 31 was Janine Bartlett. Maggie presented the prizes.
