LEE OUT AFTER TAKING FIRST SET

THERE WAS a time during Martin Lee's first-round outing on No 7 court on Tuesday afternoon when I thought we could add his name to that of Henman and Rusedski as that of a player through to the second round of Wimbledon.

Instead of which, he can console himself with the fact that he lasted longer into the tournament than the holder, Lleyton Hewitt, and took a set from his opponent, which is as much as Hewitt had managed on Monday.

Lee '” just back after a groin injury and knee surgery '” got off to a whirlwind start. He served with venom, returned with pace and precision and made the World No 86 scramble for any sort of reward.

Lee, World No 351 and British No 4, served and felt his way into the match, holding to love. And then he built a solid foundation for himself by immediately breaking the Spaniard to 15, Ferrer netting at the crucial stage.
