Littlehampton claim scalp to seal first league win

Littlehampton Rugby Club won their first league game of the season on Saturday with a 12-5 success over Shoreham.

Shoreham had started the day second in the Sussex Intermediate League while their hosts were second from bottom.

But Littlehampton recorded their first win of the season with a gritty victory.

In an evenly contested game, Littlehampton went ahead in the opening 10 minutes with a pushover try from captain Mike Page, which Ben Best converted.

Page touched down his second early in the second half, as each team took it in turns to attack. Littlehampton went close on several occasions but greasy conditions and Shoreham’s well-organised defence prevented them from crossing the line.

Both teams went down to 14 players through yellow cards and Shoreham grabbed a try back with 15 minutes left but they were unable to break down the home side’s defence again.

Littlehampton are at Heathfield & Waldron on Saturday.

LITTLEHAMPTON: Page, Russell, Newman, Williams, Eames, Keirle, Simmons, Quinney, Elliott, Shergold, Best, Brogan, Mathews, Johnson, Ritchie.
