Luffa lasses are queens of the region's netball courts

These are structured to follow a strict rotation order to truly test the ability of teams to work together and to play in all positions.

It was a very cold evening but the action warmed them up nicely.

After being randomly allocated their starting positions by teachers from other schools, the Luffa teams started competitively and took early leads in both competitions with big wins against Midhurst, St Philip Howard and CHSG.

This was down to some excellent centre-court play from players normally more comfortable defending the Luffa goal.

Encouragement from everyone on the Luffa teams gave non-shooters the confidence to have a shot at goal - with many successes.

The senior tournament brought players who have never played together before into a strong and successful team, clearly beating all opponents they came up against and leading to them taking the overall title.

The Year 11 competition went down to the last match, Luffa versus Lavant.

This is an old rivalry which has gone either way in many tournaments and matches over the years. However, Luffa had the edge and showed how skilled and versatile their players really were.

Great feeding into the circle from players more used to defending plus exceptional shooting brought a 7-4 win and cemented Luffa as the winners.

PE teacher Rachel Hall said: “I’m really proud of both teams. They were made up of players of mixed ability and took the versatility aspect of the tournament very seriously. They encouraged each other and used each other’s strengths to produce the best performances regardless of positions.”

Both teams were delighted to ‘do the double’ and for the Year 11s this was an emotional end to West Sussex West netball matches and leagues, where – incredibly - they have won every year from Year 7 through to 11.
