Mac: Time we all began performing

County League OneHailsham 0 Worthing Utd 2Hailsham manager Kenny McCreadie says everybody at The Beaconsfield must hold up their hands and start performing.

Mac said: 'That's me included. We're not doing it at home and that's frustrating. The fans pay good money and have a right to moan.

'I've three or four players who could step up from this level but they're not getting the support they deserve from the others.

'The match against Worthing was poor and they deserved to win, but we missed four good chances all within the penalty area in the first half and not one of them hit the target. That's not good enough.'

McCreadie was back to his vocal self after he blamed his vow of silence to be the cause of a cup defeat the previous week, but his words fell on deaf ears.

Even given their long injury list Hailsham produced a lacklustre display and United took full advantage.

Goalkeeper Russell Tanner made a fine save from Jan Miller before United went ahead on 15 minutes in controversial circumstances.

United's Lee Gibbs blasted in a shot and the ball struck Steve Hunt on the arm at point-blank range. Referee Tim Robinson awarded a penalty, Hunt was booked for his protests and Gibbs scored from the spot.

Tempers were frayed and Paul Richardson and Grant Spencer were yellow carded shortly after a flare-up in which a number of players squared up to each other.

Into the second half Scott French and David Bradshaw came on for Spencer and Jason Satchwell with French just wide from a close-range header.

United goalkeeper Di Barnardo saved well from French and Simon Stevens should have scored when the goal was gaping, but United got their second on 82 minutes when Joe Shelley latched onto a through ball and drilled a left-footer past Tanner.

Tomorrow Chichester City are the visitors and McCreadie said: 'It'll be a hard game, but we seem to win them and lose against the teams we are expected to beat.'

McCreadie gave French 30 minutes on Saturday and said he looked 'lively', while he hopes Ashley Jarvis will be fit to bolster midfield.

Hailsham: Tanner, Hunt, Early, Spencer (Bradshaw), P Richardson, Satchwell (S French), Barnard, Stevens, Cooper, M Richardson, Barden.

County League One

East Preston 2 Crowborough 2

THE Crows were missing five regular players and they were sluggish in the opening spell, so it was no surprise when Stuart Bennett opened the scoring for the hosts with a spectacular 25-yarder.

His brother James then made it 2-0 on 29 minutes as Crows struggled to cope as East Preston passed the ball with much more conviction.

Crows were thrown a lifeline in the final minutes of the half when Dean Chamberlain's free-kick was put away from close range by Chris Ransome.

The second half was better for Crowborough and on 78 minutes Ransome raced through only to be pulled down inside the penalty area. Dave Adams stepped up to make it 2-2 from the spot. Whilst Crows's performance was below par they could easily have won it in the final ten minutes. Steve Prodger's clever free-kick hit the underside of the crossbar and was cleared away, and in the 88th minute Craig Bishop's header went into the net only for the referee to disallow it.

Crowborough: Movaffagh, Munday, Prodger, A Bishop, C Bishop, Baker, Ransome, Chamberlain, Adams, Body (Smith), Trelevan. Unused subs: Colbran, Meek.

l The Crows should have Rhodes, Godden, Clarke, Bull and Meek fit for tomorrow's visit to Littlehampton. Further good news is that Richard Piper scored for the reserves after being out for six weeks due to ankle problems.

Division Three Cup 1st Round

Ifield Edwards 2 Uckfield Town 1

For the second successive week Town were to endure a narrow defeat and competition exit.

Town promoted striker Chris Watson from the reserves, with Ben Elsey going in the opposite direction, and also welcomed the return of winger Scott McLeary from illness to partner him with Jamie Walsh on the bench.

Uckfield went ahead after 15 minutes with their first attack of note. Matt Michaels's lofted pass released Dan Barnard, and he produced a superb finish to tuck the ball low past the advancing keeper.

Town camped in the Ifield half for the next 20 minutes, and almost extended the lead when Stuart Mouland's perfect delivery from a setpiece was met by a diving header from Michaels but thwarted by an excellent save.

Ifield equalised through a superb piece of individual skill as left back Mills waltzed past three challenges before sending a shot into the top corner from 20 yards.

If the first half was evenly balanced, the second period belonged to Ifield, and on 50 minutes Hughes pounced on a loose ball in the area to fire past goalkeeper Graham Leach.

Leach was to keep Town in the match with a couple of fine saves.

The Ifield centre-half was then sent off in stopping Town's main chance of parity. Ross Sawyer flicked on for Barnard to burst clear, but his surge towards goal was abruptly halted by the defender's cynical challenge.

Uckfield: Leach, D Gardiner (Watson), N Walsh, G Sawyer, Hunter, Watts (McLeary), Mouland, Michaels, R Sawyer, A Barnard (J Walsh), D Barnard.

County League Two

Wealden 1 Selsey 1

WEALDEN manager Mark Simpson considers Selsey a 'very good side.'

He went on: 'Really we did not put in a performance on Saturday, they showed more heart, they're organised and strong with massive experience in the shape of Clinton Moore and John Price.

'They played 3-5-2 and are powerful defensively and we switched to 4-3-3 in a bid not to be outnumbered in midfield. I hoped to occupy their back three and stop them getting out. It did the job but is not my style, we're a 4-4-2 team.'

Selsey took the lead when Moore sprung the Wealden offside trap and rounded Gareth Clarke to tap the ball into the net.

At the other end Andy Johnson struck a left-footer against a post, but a minute before the interval he latched onto a half-hit clearance and volleyed home.

Wealden will be without Dan Merry for tomorrow's John O'Hara League Cup second round tie at home to Wick. Merry was knocked out when he and his wife were involved in a car crash in Eastbourne on Monday. Simpson said: 'All at the club wish them well.'

Division Three Cup 1st Round

Wadhurst 0 Newhaven 3

NEWHAVEN manager Jason Tighe says the Fort Road club is absolutely buzzing at the moment. Tighe went on: 'People at the club are saying the spirit here is the best they can remember for ten years.

'It's brilliant and the lads are already talking about the big game with Peacehaven on Boxing Day. They can't wait and I reckon we'll have a big crowd for that one.'

Newhaven disposed of Wadhurst in the cup with the minimum of fuss on Saturday.

Tighe said: 'We were never in any trouble. It was fantastic, a splendid performance, we tore them to pieces.

'We should have been 5-0 up at the break. One effort from Gary Holmes crashed against the corner of crossbar and post, it was a tremendous shot, and Shaun Breach watched his effort touched onto the crossbar by the goalkeeper.

'Ross Newman and Chris Georgiou couldn't get onto the end of a Simon Halsey cross with the goal begging, but the miss of the match was down to me.

'The ball came six yards out and I tried to smash it but dragged it past the post. It was an awful miss.'

Tighe did score the Newhaven opener a couple of minutes later when he headed home at the far post from Ross Newman's cross.

Newhaven were two up on 66 minutes when Jamie Bartholomew crossed for Halsey to control and smash the ball home.

Georgiou got the third on 75 minutes. He played a 1-2 with Halsey, shot from 25 yards and saw it go under the goalkeeper's dive.

Tomorrow Newhaven visit Bosham and will be without Kevin Marchesi, who will be working. There is also a doubt about goalkeeper Mark Hildersley.

Division Three Cup 1st Round

Peacehaven 4 Haywards Heath 0

PEACEHAVEN won a second-round tie at Rustington after this comprehensive victory over Haywards Heath on Saturday.

Manager Darren Guirey said: 'They had some good players including Gerry Ryan's boy Daragh from Worthing so this has to be a good win.'

It took Peacehaven 50 minutes to break the deadlock when Simon Bailey slotted the ball home after a good move but then the goals came regularly.

Stephen Grabowski got the second from 25 yards on 78 minutes, the third came from a Ryan Walton penalty six minutes later after Mark Price had been fouled, and Price stuck away the fourth with a minute left.

One blow for Guirey is that Luke Martin is sidelined for five weeks after damaging ankle ligaments against Haywards Heath, while Ashley Jones is on a stag weekend and misses tomorrow's testing visit from second-placed Lingfield.

Peacehaven: Parsons, Murray (Brown), Jones, Rider, King, Bailey, Grabowski, Martin (Page), Marsh, Price, Stepney (Walton).

Crawley Down 4 Saltdean 1

INJURIES and suspensions took their toll as the young Saltdean side were well beaten at Crawley Down on Saturday.

Smeaton said: 'Hopefully it's beginning to look up as I had three of the injured back on the bench on Saturday while Craig Bunch is now free of suspension.

'We had plenty of the game against Crawley and may have been lucky to be 1-0 down at the break. Their first goal from a penalty was dubious.

'But we didn't defend well in the second half and conceded two in ten minutes after the break. From then on we were chasing the game.'

It was already 4-0 when Carl Southwell scored for Saltdean late on after playing a 1-2 with Dean Loader.

Now Saltdean face a daunting task tomorrow with a visit to St Francis Rangers. Smeaton added: 'It's been a tough few weeks but we've got four home games through November so hopefully things will improve.'

Saltdean: Smeaton, Smith, Bradbury (Southwell), Stevens (Newman), Burns, Costello, Cole, Clarke, Coaker, Saxby (Loader) Pietzak.

County Two

Midhurst & Easebourne 3 Seaford 2

It proved a miserable Saturday with Adam Kneller red-carded for two yellows in the first half and a recent unbeaten record over the past month going.

Mark Doherty returned from injury and Scott Allison from suspension, but Seaford got off to a dreadful start when on four minutes Midhurst's May ran 50 yards before hitting a 25-yarder that squeezed under Kieran Maher.

Seaford went two down on the half-hour when they allowed Dummer too much space and he easily beat Maher.

Tom Callaghan reduced the arrears on 47 minutes with a tap-in, but Dummer grabbed his second goal seven minutes later.

Tristan Jobe got Seaford's second.

Seaford: Maher, Moore, Doherty, Hammond, Allison, Plastow (O Stanyard), Kneller, A Dartnall (Callaghan), Hamblin (Facer), Jobe, C Stanyard.
