Martine is a golden girl as she’s crowned European Champion

Loxwood athlete Martine Scott has proved she is a golden girl once again by being crowned the European Biathle Champion.

The 12-year-old won in the European Championships in Setubal, Portugal, when representing Great Britain last month.

The biathle differs from a biathlon as there is no break between the different sections and consists of a continuous run, open water swim and another run.

The young athlete managed to secure two gold medals in the under-13 age group, as with her win, she also secured Team GB first place for the team event, with her fellow team-mates coming in sixth and seventh.

Martine’s mum, Christine said: “Martine was determined to bring home a medal of some colour for Team GB but to win the gold was a fantastic achievement and she still has a huge smile on her face.

“Marti ran a fantastic race from start to finish and although there was a very strong underwater current, she managed to finish in 4min 22.9sec.”

This put her an impressive seven seconds clear of the second competitor, Russian Ekaterina Galukhina, in 4-29.3 and Italian Valeria Ceccato in 4-29.8, who took the bronze. This latest triumph adds to Scott’s victories earlier this year in the British Triathlon Championships 2014 and the National Biathlon Team Championship at the Olympic Park.

Her next challenge will be her first tetrathlon; a run, swim, shoot and fence regional competition in Kent on September 7.
