Martlets marvels take county bowling title

West Sussex's annual county fours championship attracted 16 teams from around the county who competed for the Neil Harris Cup.

After the round-robin group games, The Martlets met Slinfold Infinity and won 11-6 to earn a semi-final against Clapham & Patching, who had beaten Ashington 13-10.

In the semi-final, The Martlets took an early lead and ran out comfortable winners 16-2.

In the other half of the draw Lavant played holders Chanctonbury, who won a very tight game 7-5 by virtue of the closest of close measures on the last end.

Chanctonbury went on to play Midhurst, who had beaten Bognor Goodwoods 8-5, and ran out winners of that game 8-4.

In the final The Martlets’ Chris Blackman, Chris Rolph, Mel Lillywhite and Marc Lancaster played the Chanctonbury four.

The lead constantly changed, but The Martlets picked up four shots on the penultimate end to lead by three.

Chanctonbury could manage only two shots on the last end and The Martlets were champions by 10-9.

ARUN

Worthing 82 Arun 109

Arun ladies’ friendly at Worthing ended with a good win for them.

Scores: Curtis, Slatter, Pickard, Janman won 26-11; Hobbs, Pugh, Brooker, I Brooker won 23-11; Simmons, Marrs, Wiedenheoft, Spicer draw 24-24; Fidgeon, Tooley, Potter, Adams lost 21-13; Anderson, Cooke, Bonnar, Miles won 23-15.

Arun ladies visited the Isle of Wight club in the second round of the Mason’s B Team Trophy. The trip wasn’t great but ended very well for Arun as they won by 31 shots.

Scores: Stocker, Napper, Spicer, Janman won

39-11; Hobbs, Brooker, Collins, Adams won 22-19.

Preston 145 Arun 106

When Arun visited Preston in Brighton, it did not go well in a six-rink friendly men’s fixture and they lost by 39 shots.

Arun won on two rinks and lost on four to a strong Preston team.

At the halfway stage of ten ends, Arun were 25 shots down but came back well in the second half to keep the score reasonable.

Crablands Auks took on Bognor Silver. A close match was won 45-41 by the Auks for four points.

A friendly versus Hunston was played in excellent spirit with Crablands winning 41-40.

Crablands Auks played Lavant Blue in a league game. They had mixed results across the board but had an overall 36-35 win.

Crablands Cormorants entertained Storrington and won on all rinks to gain six league points in a 45-29 win.

Lavant Red lost at Goodwoods Green. Peter Winter’s team won five ends to score nine shots. Peter Whale’s team took nine ends to score thirteen shots. Keith Fancy’s friendly team had a similar fate.

Good-Woods Greens moved into the third round of the Knockout Cup when they made it a double over Manning Heath, beating the Red Squirrels 42-22.

Mat one saw Greens secure a 17-16 win. On mat two Greens won 25-6.
