The handover of the courts from the convent to the club

The courts used to be part of the playing fields of the St Margaret’s Convent School and the tennis club have been renting the land since the school closed, but have now bought it.

The purchase is a big moment for the club and for Midhurst and provides a chance to make much-needed improvements to facilities. The club can invest in better courts and a new clubhouse.

Club chairman Paul Ryrie said: “We are delighted to be the new owners. Our aim now is to build on the success of the club and provide top-quality facilities for local people. We want to see more people of all ages playing more tennis.”

Ryrie thanked the sisters at the Convent of Mercy in Midhurst for their support and loyalty. Two of the sisters, Sister Joan and Sister Patricia, join members for the handshake and handover.

There was a toast to the many years as a school facility and to the future of Midhurst Tennis Club.

The club have five tennis courts and run events and playing sessions all year round.

Coach Alex Bone, of Generation Tennis, helps adults and juniors of all ages improve their game and runs The Road to Wimbledon competition for youngsters in conjunction with the Lawn Tennis Association, junior league matches, and cardio tennis for adult fitness.

Midhurst compete in the East Hampshire League with men’s, ladies’ and mixed teams.

The club welcomesnew members whether they wish to play competitive or social tennis. Throughout the year there are regular informal sessions – just come along and have a game. The week’s programme can be found on the website.

At an open day on Sunday, May 15, the club are offering beginners and ‘rusty racquets’ free coaching sessions between 11am and 2pm. plus a cardio fitness session hosted by Alex Bone.

There will be refreshments plus an informal play-in to round off a day of tennis.
