Bowls: Middleton ensure insurers have a day to remember

There was a full house when Middleton hosted a friendly against the Insurance Bowling Association, a nomadic club whose members have a past or present relationship with the insurance industry.

A brief downpour did not dampen spirits and after some close fought matches the visitors came out on top, four rinks to one.

A mixed friendly against Sutton saw Middleton came out ahead.

In two BML mixed league fixtures, it was one win and one loss for Middleton.

The men continue to struggle playing away in the BM League.

The ladies, playing in a C&M league fixture against Marine Gardens, maintained their unbeaten record by a single shot.

Worthing BHP 2 Chichester 3

Chichester played at Beach House Park in the second round of the National Top Club and beat Worthing BC by three disciplines to two.

As ever Peter Whale and Jim Larkin got Chichester off to the perfect start with wins in the two and four-wood singles, followed by the triples, leaving no way back for the opposition.

In the next round, Chichester will play Worthing Pavilion BC.

In the second round of the national Tony Allcock mixed double bink over-60s trophy, Chichester had a very good win against Burgess Hill BC.

In the next round Chichester will hos Homefield Park.

Chichester 43 Field Place 32

Chichester continued their run in the county double fours conmpetition for the Abergavenny Cup with an 11-shot victory against Field Place.

Their away team trailed for most of the match but took the lead on the 17th end going on to win by two shots. Their home team raced to a 15-1 lead, although Field Place pegged them back they held on to win by nine shots.

Chichester will now play Norfolk in the next round.

Bognor prevailed in a C&M League tussle.

On a perfect summer day Frank Bray, president of the Wittering and District Bowls Club, welcomed 48 members of the club to President’s Day – an afternoon of friendly bowling matches.

The format for the competition was three games of eight ends each.

The final scores resulted in a win of just one shot with Ann Miles, Graham Mason, Judy Bangs and Barry Horsley (skip) scoring 30 with 17 against and Kate Nixon, Mick Fisher,Val Hooker and Lindsay Bangs (skip) scoring 30 with 18 against.

In the clubhouse, bowlers enjoyed a meal prepared by Jan Derkatsch and her army of helpers.

The president presented vouchers to the winning team, bottles of wine to the runners-up and boxes of chocolates to all those who had helped and gave a vote of thanks to everyone for making his day so memorable.

Special guests were Roger Smith, Terry Mulligan, John Derkatsch, Jenny Knotts and Maurice and Peg Lillywhite.

Congratulations were given to Maurice and Peg Lillywhite, who had recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

In a friendly at Haslemere, Midhurst lost by 13 shots.

Petworth’s men’s league team had a narrow 6-4 defeat at Tarring Priory – 82-64 the scores.

At home to Pagham in the BM League, Southbourne won on both triples to take maximum points.

Three friendly mixed triples lost 52-37 at Aldingbourne.

In the Swansea Gardens League, Pagham defeated Bognor 53-13.
