St Gerards Amateur Boxing Club travelled to Gosport Boxing Club for the 2013 senior novice championships for the southern counties were starting.

The Chichester camp took up-and-coming fighter Mwenya Chisanga for his first championship and he was in category A for boxers with ten or fewer contests.

He weighed in at 63.5kg (10st) in the light-welterweight division.

There were seven entrants in his category and Chisanga was drawn to face Will Nimako from Basingstoke Boxing Club in three two-minute rounds.

Nimako was a counter-puncher and Chisenga was told to double up his jab and feint with the jab to draw Nimako out.

The first round was pretty even as they were both feeling each other out, and the second was much the same but they both stepped up a gear and the St Gerards camp felt their man had done enough to win this round.

For the third round Chisanga had to up the ante to make sure he progressed. He didn’t disappoint, going out all guns blazing and taking the contest to Nimako, who responded.

The bigger power shots came from Chisanga’s ferocious onslaught but Nimako caught him with a couple of crackers.

Both boxers gave their all and got rapturous applause at the end of the contest. Chisanga was awarded the decision by a majority verdict to progress to the semi-finals.

Chisanga’s St Gerards coach Jon Mills said: “The novices are a big stepping stone for would-be boxers and lead eventually to the full ABAE championships and are watched by England and GB selectors for stars in the making.”
