Chichester squash stars third after win over Winchester

Chichester moved up to third place in the Premier Squash League table with victory at Winchester.

It is still very tight in the race for a top two play-off position but Chichester are only six points behind joint leaders Exeter and Surrey.

Lauren Briggs made a welcome return to the Chichester line-up and played world No25 Emily Whitlock. They had four very tight games. Briggs took the first 12-10 but the next three went to Whitlock 11-7, 11-9, 11-9 - and Briggs led in the third and fourth.

The standard of play was a great advert for ladies’ squash.

After a slow start, Olly Pett took the first 12-10 against Daniel Poleshchuk. Pett got into his stride and continued to play controlled, error-free squash to take the next two 11-4, 11-4 and level the match.

Robbie Temple struggled to find top form for Chichester but tenaciously battled to a five-game win over Scott Fitzgerald - 14-12, 10-12, 8-11, 11-9, 11-4 the score.

Chichester’s Rex Hedrick had a battle royale against Greg Lobban. The Winchester player took the first and led in the second before Hedrick started to turn on the pressure.

The match was attritional and in the end Hedrick’s superior fitness pulled him through as he won 11-6 in the deciding game - meaning Chichester had taken an unassailable 3-1 lead.

In the dead-rubber match Chichester’s Jon Kemp played world 24 Marwan El Shorbagy. It was played at a fantastic tempo, with both players going for their shots in real exhibition style.

Kemp found the tin a little too often and El Shorbagy ran out 3-0 winner, although the second game could have gone either way.

The next match is a home fixture on Tuesday, February 18 against leaders and champions Surrey Health and Rackets, which will be a must-win encounter. Play starts at 7pm and tickets are on sale now on 01243 785664 - so why not come along to support Chichester in their quest to make the play-offs?
