LEONARDO RUGGIERI successfully defended his Golf At Goodwood Junior Club Championship title with an impressive 72 last Sunday.

Ruggieri, one of Golf At Goodwood’s promising young talents, was in scintillating form from the word go as he took to the renowned Downs Course with 15 other junior members.

Despite heavy downpours on arrival which caused question marks over the continuation of play, the sunshine soon broke through allowing the aspiring young golfers to enjoy almost perfect golfing conditions as they relished the challenge.

Scoring three birdies on the ninth, 11th and 16th, the 17-year-old Ruggieri from Chichester finished with an unbelievable round of gross 72 (one over par), improving on his 2014 score by four points to claim the title for a second consecutive year.

The runner-up in the gross category was William Groom with a gross 80 consisting of birdies on 13 and 16.

The competition’s net winner was Chris Jones, 17, with a spectacular 65, while the runner up in the net category was Jamie Burchell, 9, with a solid 72.

George Hannah, Golf Events Coordinator, said: “A big thank you goes out to the parents of all the juniors for their continued support which gives the juniors the opportunity to enjoy the great game of golf.

“Events like this would not go ahead without the support of the parents and the enthusiasm of our young junior members.

“Congratulations must go to all juniors who played, a wide variety of ages and abilities taking on the fierce Downs course of the yellow tee which is a stern test even for the more experienced golfer.”

Entries are now open for The Bobby Locke & Lady Helen Junior Open 2015 which takes place on Sunday, 20 September.
